Tree watering instructions
For a young tree less than 6” in DBH (Diameter at breast height) we recommend using a Tree watering bag. This disperses water slowly and evenly to insure deep watering and to limit evaporation loss. There are various brands of bags that can be purchased at local and online merchants.
For larger trees we recommend a soaker hose or garden hose turned on at a slow flow. This prevents run off and allows water to infiltrate the soils. If water is not available close by 5 gallon buckets of water can work but very labor intensive. We would also like to remind people if we have a dry winter trees still need water and to keep an eye on the soil conditions around their trees.
How much water does my tree need?
- Measure the circumference of your tree at the 4 foot height
- Then divide this number by 3 (to find the rough diameter which is C= pi x d).
- That number x 5 gallons is the amount of water to water. Be sure to water under the whole canopy area, not just at the trunk.
- The tree needs to be watered 2 x per week until we have regular rain.
