The primary purpose of the Lifeguard Recertification Blended Learning (BL) Course is to give participants who are currently certified American Red Cross Lifeguarding the opportunity to review the course knowledge and skills within a formal course setting to maintain their American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification.
The Lifeguarding Recertification Course combines an online portion with an in-person portion conducted by a Red Cross Certified Lifeguarding instructor.
Total course instruction time: 14 hours
Online Portion
- 6 hours to complete ALL modules.
- 16 modules
- Individual modules take 15 to 30 minutes to complete.
- Each module begins with a pre-assessment.
In-person Portion
- 8 hours in-person/in-water training
- Attend the entire course and participate in all class sessions.
- Actively participate in all course activities:
- Skill practices
- Skill drills
- Activities
- Scenarios
- Demonstrate proficiency in all skills.
- Pass the final written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent.
- Pass the three (3) final skill assessments, which include:
- Timed Response
- Rotation and Scanning
- Final Team Response Testing Scenario
Schedule
The Lifeguard Recertification BL Course will be held at Veterans Memorial Pool from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2024. The cost is $75.
Requirements
To participate in the Lifeguarding Recertification BL Course, participants must:
- Hold a current certification, or expired by no more than 30 days, in American Red Cross Lifeguarding.
- Successfully complete two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations:
Prerequisite 1
Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:
- Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface, then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.)
- Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
- Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, a combination of both.
Prerequisite 2
Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.)
- Submerge to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object.
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out of or near the surface.
- Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
