Legal Fires

Recreational fires within the city limits of Walla Walla are allowed for cooking, warming, or religious purposes, UNLESS there are specific restrictions issued from the Department of Ecology or Department of Natural Resources that prohibit recreational fires. 

Recreational fires should be in an approved container or pit and be no larger than 3’x3’x2’ high.  Fire pits are not allowed within 25’ of a structure without approval from the fire code official.  All fires should be constantly attended, and a garden hose or fire extinguisher should be readily available. 

Acceptable materials for recreational campfires include:

  • Dry, untreated wood
  • Propane fire pits
  • Briquettes

Illegal Fires

  • All burning of yard debris, construction materials, or garbage
  • All use of burn barrels
  • All residential and land-clearing burning
