The City of Walla Walla requires a “Knox Box” key system on all new and remodeled buildings, as per Section 506 of the International Fire Code.  The purpose of the Knox Box is to enable the Fire Department quick access to the interior of the structure without using forcible entry, saving business and homeowners thousands of dollars in property damage.  A simple false alarm after hours can require forcible entry if a Knox Box is not installed.

Maintenance and Purchasing

Please call the Fire Department at 509.527.4429 ext. 5 any time a lock has been changed or rekeyed so a new key can be secured in the Knox Box.  For more information or to purchase a Knox Box Key System go to www.knoxbox.com. Enter Walla Walla City Fire Dept for the department name and select 3200 Series for commercial applications or Knox Homebox for residential applications.  Either the surface or flush mount option is acceptable.

Installation

Knox boxes should be installed near the main entrance of the building so they are easy to locate and access in an emergency, preferably no higher than 6’ and no lower than 2’ off the ground.  Additional Knox Boxes may be required on large commercial structures or facilities with multiple buildings.

Contact the Prevention Office at 509-524-4604 or 509-524-4603 prior to installation for approval of mounting locations.
