Overview
The city is currently developing alternatives for improving pedestrian safety and accessibility in the vicinity of Pioneer Park. The project is anticipated for construction in early 2024.
During the recent public outreach conducted earlier this year for the Pioneer Park pedestrian improvement project, the city received numerous comments regarding safe accommodation of bicycles on Division Street, with many people requesting that bike lanes be added. Striping bike lanes on Division would require removal of parking from one side of the roadway due to width constraints.
The project consultant made several observations of parking utilization in the corridor and used this information to develop a proposed layout for bicycle lanes that would minimize parking disruption. They additionally prepared an option for consideration that utilizes “sharrows”, or shared bicycle/travel lanes to maintain parking on both sides – essentially the lane configuration that exists now but with more distinctive striping.
City staff is seeking your input on these 2 options.
Option 1 - Bike Lanes Added to S. Division Street
Bike Lanes
Considerations |
Bike lane separate from travel lanes are the safest of the two options for cyclists. |
Current city plans show Division Street as a “bike route” but do not call for bike lanes. However, Division Street is classified as a collector. New collector roadways would generally be constructed with two travel lanes and two bike lanes. |
Bike lanes would require parking to be removed from one side of Division Street.
|
Adding bike lanes would require bulb-outs to be eliminated on one side of the road to avoid impact to the bike lanes. |
Option 2 - Shared Travel Lanes (Sharrows)
Shared Travel Lanes (Sharrows)
Considerations |
Functionally similar to what exists today (shared travel lanes), with more distinctive signing and striping. |
Mixing vehicles and bicycles is usually less safe for cyclists that separating them. |
Allows parking to remain along entire corridor, as it is today. No impact to residents or park visitors. |
Sharrows could allow full sized bulb-outs to be installed at the crosswalks which would decrease exposure while crossing, improve pedestrian visibility, improving overall pedestrian safety. |
