City of Walla Walla receives AWC Municipal Excellence Award

The City of Walla Walla has received a Municipal Excellence Award for the construction of the sleeping site. The award, issued by the Associated Washington Cities (AWC), recognizes innovative city projects that significantly improve the quality of life for their communities. The competition is open each year to any Washington city or town. Applications are judged based on the success of the program, its use of resources, and its contribution to community value.

The sleeping site, located at the Service Center, was created to help residents experiencing homelessness find better emergency shelter. In collaboration with the Walla Walla Alliance for the Homeless, Walla Walla Community College’s carpentry program, as well as a dedicated group of community organizations and volunteers, the City helped build 31 weatherproof Conestoga huts. The site first opened on May 25, 2017.

The sleeping site is an ongoing project that continues to develop, but it is not a comprehensive solution. The City will continue to work collaboratively with the County and local organizations to address the homelessness challenge in the Walla Walla area.
